The 17 Bristol restaurants, takeaways and cafés with a ZERO food hygiene rating

There are 17 businesses in Bristol with a food hygiene rating of zero out of five.

The restaurants, takeaways and shops all received the lowest score possible in the Food Standard Agency’s (FSA) national food hygiene rating scheme after inspectors paid a visit.

Venues receiving five are deemed to be the safest, cleanest and best.

Health and safety officials also take the cleanliness and condition of the premises into consideration, ensuring safety for customers.

Sometimes a zero rating doesn’t mean unhygienic, it can be in some cases a paperwork problem.

Businesses do not have to display their rating, but the information is available on the FSA website.

The Bristol Post attempted to contact all of the following businesses for comment.

What does '0' mean?

12 places in Leicester have a food hygiene rating of zero.

The hygiene standards are ranked on a scale of 0-5.

At the bottom, ‘0’ means urgent improvement is required.

At the top, ‘5’ means hygiene standards are very good.

If the top rating is not given, the officer will explain to the owner/manager of the business what needs to be improved, and the action that needs to be taken.

A statement on the FSA website says: "The food hygiene rating or inspection result given to a business reflects the standards of food hygiene found on the date of inspection or visit by the local authority. The food hygiene rating is not a guide to food quality."

Just how is a food hygiene rating worked out?

A food safety officer inspects a business to ensure it meets the requirements set out by food hygiene law. The officer is from the local authority where the business is located.

At the inspection they will check:

How hygienically the food is handled. How it is stored, cooled, prepared, re-heated and cooked.

The condition and structure of the building. The cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities.

How the business goes about ensuring that food is safe, and leaves the officer feeling confidents about the standard and how they will be maintained in the future.

Each of these elements are essential is making sure that food hygiene standards are met, and the food served and sold is safe to eat.
